It's not exactly the use that we anticipated when ADCO helped Columbia come up with its "Famously Hot" identity, but it's yet another example of how ubiquitous it has become. With President Trump appearing today at Airport High School, the South Carolina Democratic Party put out this release: Columbia’s #FamouslyHot Trump Protest, 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Airport High School, 1315 Boston Ave, West Columbia, SC 29170. Indivisible Midlands has a protest permit that runs from 4:00 – 8:00 PM and they will be standing along the sidewalks on Boston Ave starting from the corner of Boston Ave and Greenwood Drive (between the high school and...

We continue to enjoy the many ways local folks adopt and adapt the Famously Hot brand we created for the Midlands Authority for Conventions. Sports & Tourism. This week, we were particularly delighted to hear one of Cathy Bradberry's Earth Sense podcasts on S.C. ETV Radio. In the podcast for Tuesday, which was about cooling your home more efficiently, she said in passing: But let's talk about things you can do to help decrease the cost of cooling your home through another INfamously Hot South Carolina summer.... Infamously Hot? Yeah, we'll take that, and be gratified by the further evidence...

We've noted with pleasure all of the instances in recent years in which "Famously Hot" has been adopted, co-opted and embraced by Columbians, as well as folks from other parts (who were the actual target audience). Seldom, however, have we received praise as direct as that in an editorial by Editor Ken Allen in the latest edition of Columbia Business Monthly. An excerpt: One of the cleverest things city tourism officials have done was to finally embrace that image and turn it to our advantage. In 2008 the Midlands Authority for Conventions, Sports & Tourism, the Greater Columbia Chamber of...

The trend continues, as those who write or speak about Columbia start out with a nod to our Famously Hot meme. The latest manifestation of this is the op-ed piece in The State today by longtime local radio host Keven Cohen, which is essentially a love letter to his adopted city. Excerpts: Columbia, SC — Famously Hot! The Capital City. You can use any catch phrase you want. For me, after more than 18 years here, there’s one reason I refer to Columbia as my paradise: the people. It’s not geographical, although that’s a plus. It’s not the culture, although...

One day the end of last week, a client asked, "Are y'all the ones who did 'Famously Hot'?" Well, yes, as it happens -- we are. And we continue to be gratified at the community's continuing embrace of the meme. Did you, by any chance, attend the first Famously Hot Music Festival over the weekend, which was promoted by Red to Gray Creative? If not, you should have...

This morning on Twitter, The Washington Post whined that "Today is going to be very hot in D.C." I followed the link. You know what they think is "very hot?" They were expecting it to be between 97 and 102. (OK, actually it turned out to be 104 there; but that wasn't what was forecast this morning.) Really. What we would consider to be middlin' warm here in Famously Hot Columbia, SC. A good day for seersucker, perhaps, but no use complaining... So I reTweeted that, adding the message, "Oh, yeah? Well, it's going to be 107 here, you wimps..."...

Check out the latest in the U.S. Airways magazine: Columbia, South Carolina, has proclaimed itself the “New Southern Hot Spot” — bold words for a place that’s little more than 100 miles from Charleston. No doubt, Columbia is a venerable Southern city, the state capital no less, with a winning home team, the South Carolina Gamecocks, and enough fork-tender barbecue to feed all the tailgaters at Williams-Brice Stadium. But can it live up to its new slogan? We’ll investigate . . . Columbia, South Carolina, is first and foremost a college town where the University of South Carolina Gamecocks rule...
