Have you done business lately with a company with “AAA” at the front of its name? Maybe you have. Maybe your very favorite plumber, or florist, or barbershop is called “AAA Something.”
But if so, it was probably named that a while back…
As this blog post notes, there was a time when it was all about getting to the front of the alphabet:
It’s true. Before search engines existed, “the yellow pages” was everyone’s search engine. Everybody knew how the records were organized. They were in alphabetical order. Some business owners (the smart ones) would prepend “AAA” to the front of their business names to make sure that they got the “number one ranking” for their business category in the yellow pages. Need a plumber? Look in the yellow pages under “plumbers.” The very first listing was “AAA Plumbers.” They got lots of phone calls and made lots of money. That was Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in the phone book era….
Now that we have actual SEO, getting prospective customers to notice you takes a lot more than just having the chutzpah to change your name in a transparent bid for attention. It’s a little trickier than that.
If you’d like some help with that, let us know…
