This week, our own Brad Warthen received the above notice via email, and wondered what to make of it.
We suspected it had something to do with his 1,134 connections.
In any case, if you received a similar notice, and more to the point, if you’re one of the 190 million or so LinkedIn users who did not, you might want to consult this analysis of what it all means.
For starters, “top 5 percent” means top 10 million out of 200 million users. Of course, not all of those “users” are doing much using, which is why they didn’t get a notice like this one.

The more often you comment, like, and start discussions in LinkedIn groups and Answers, the more likely people will view you as a subject matter expert, and in turn, view your profile. Kudos if you are in the top 10%, even if it is 20 million people.
And conversely, if you didn’t get such an acknowledgement, and you are trying to leverage LinkedIn in building your business, then you need to try harder:
So if you cracked the top 10%, good job, as you are utilizing LinkedIn better than 180 million other professionals. If you, your peers, co-workers or friends are asking the last question (“Why didn’t I make the list?”), it is an absolute imperative that you take hold of LinkedIn today, because 20 million other professionals are doing a better job of it than you!
Here’s an infographic from LinkedIn showing who is using the medium where…
