Something new to be proud of: The City of Columbia was honored as a 2014 Playful City USA designation for the first time by KaBOOM!, in partnership with the Humana Foundation. “The City of Columbia is proud to be designated as a Playful City. We are committed to providing services and programs in our parks that will benefit our citizens, especially our youth. This is great news and we encourage everyone to get out and enjoy our wonderful parks this summer,” City Manager Teresa Wilson said. The City of Columbia is among 212 cities and towns across the United States named...

This morning, at the junction of Sunset Boulevard and Meeting Street, just before the Gervais Street bridge, we thought we spied a speed trap. Then, we noticed the sign, and the cab. May you and all of yours have a good, safe time tonight. Maybe we'll see you at the Famously Hot New Year's celebration at Gervais and Main.

The need is always great in the Midlands, but at the moment it's more urgent than usual: Columbia, SC (June 25, 2012) – The American Red Cross blood supply has reached emergency levels with 50,000 fewer donations than expected in June. This shortfall leaves the Red Cross with half the readily available blood products on hand now than this time last year. The Red Cross is calling on all eligible blood donors – now more than ever –...

Everywhere we turn, we see more evidence of the broad acceptance of "Famously Hot." This example is from a e-release from Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin. By the way, if you'd like to learn more about the bike tour the mayor was publicizing, and perhaps sign up for it, click here.

Recently, we've moved into a new level of acceptance of our "Famously Hot" identity. It's so well known that Columbians can invoke in part, and get the message across. As the Free Times did in this recent feature: Famously Drunk A Brief History of Drinking in Columbia BY EVA MOORE In 2011, Men’s Health magazine named Columbia the 13th drunkest city in the country. We rank 14th among cities for DUI deaths; 18th for binge drinking. And with the University of South Carolina earning the No. 20 party school slot in the 2011 Princeton Review rankings, perhaps it’s not surprising...

Just in time for Christmas, we got this great direct message from Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin via Twitter: Hope the folks at ADCO are happy to see "Famously Hot" everywhere. Good work that I think will pay dividends for years to come. Merry Merry! Yes, we are -- happy, that is. And it's great to know that the mayor joins us in celebrating the success of Famously Hot!

We much appreciate the two shout-outs we got from Kelly Barbrey Wednesday at the Hospitality Hotspotters meeting, giving us credit for helping the community come up with the "Famously Hot" campaign. We've been greatly gratified by the wide acceptance the campaign has achieved, from social media to major local events to common, everyday conversation in the Columbia area. But even we were not quite prepared for this photo that Kelly flashed on the screen at the gathering. It was taken at Williams-Brice Stadium during the USC-Georgia last year. So now we have the key bodypainters demographic on board. Wow. We've...

Just in case you missed this in The State: We’re ‘Famously Hot’ — you’re not Any other cities out there thinking about stealing Columbia’s Famously Hot slogan can now officially forget it. The Midlands Authority for Conventions, Sports & Tourism has received a Certificate of Registration from the Patent and Trademark Office. Local leaders launched “Famously Hot” in August 2008 to create a community brand to help attract meetings, conventions, sports groups and visitors to Columbia. The play on words – developed by Columbia-based advertising firm ADCO – is meant to emphasize the assets, such as arts, nightlife and cuisine,...

In Steve's office are 120 flame-red boxes about to go out to meeting planners across the country. In each is a zippered pouch containing a heavy-duty lighter and door hangers asking "Is it hot in here, OR IS IT JUST ME?" It's all part of the "Famously Hot" campaign devised by ADCO for the Midlands Authority for Conventions, Sports & Tourism. The enclosed material urges planners to come to a Web page where they can find out how to save $5,000 on their meeting "in a sultry Southern city." Which is a pretty cool deal.
